The Heritage Trains Are Rolling Through Seymour This Spring, and Here Is How to Get From the Station to the Fun

The Heritage Trains Seymour

There is something about the sound of a heritage locomotive pulling into Seymour Station that makes you forget you are only 100 kilometres from Melbourne. The town has been a railway town since 1872, and this spring, the tracks are busier than usual. Between September and November 2026, four heritage rail events pass through or depart from Seymour, and if you are visiting for any of them, the first question after stepping off the platform is a practical one: how do I get from the station to everything else? A reliable Seymour taxi service is the short answer. This guide is the longer one.

What Is Running Through Seymour Station This Spring

Goulburn Valley Explorer, Saturday 19 September

Steamrail Victoria’s Goulburn Valley Explorer departs Southern Cross Station behind classic 1915 steam locomotive A2 986, running express to Seymour before continuing at a slower pace through Nagambie and Murchison East. Passengers can choose to alight at Seymour for a few hours while the loco is turned on the turntable, or ride the full return journey. Excursion class carriages date back to 1906, with timber interiors and pressed-metal ceilings.

Seymour Railway Heritage Centre Open Days

The SRHC throws open its depot doors on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026, from 10am to 4pm each day. Expect guided tours, up-close viewing of restored carriages and locomotives, cab rides for paid-up members, a sausage sizzle, refreshments and souvenir stalls. The centre is located at 32 Victoria Street, Seymour. Adult entry is $15, children (5 to 16) $7.50, and family tickets (two adults, two children) are $35.

Show Us Ya Wheels Heritage Day Trip, Sunday 18 October

The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre runs a heritage train from Seymour Station to Numurkah for the annual Show Us Ya Wheels car and bike show. The train departs Seymour at 9:30am and returns by 5:55pm, with pickups also at Nagambie, Murchison East and Shepparton. Your train ticket includes entry to the show. Children under 17 travel and enter free.

Shiraz and Jazz Train, 9 to 12 October

A four-day heritage rail journey departing Seymour on Friday 9 October, travelling through western Victoria to Horsham. The trip includes wine tasting at Seppelt Great Western, a jazz day in Nhill, and three nights’ accommodation. Heritage carriages include original Spirit of Progress compartment cars. Fares range from $590 (rail only) to $1,450 (including accommodation).

Where the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre Is and How to Get There From the Station

The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre depot sits at 32 Victoria Street, Seymour. From Seymour Station, Victoria Street is a short distance along Station Street and into town. For visitors who are comfortable walking and travelling light, the walk is manageable. For anyone with mobility concerns, prams, luggage or young children in tow, a taxi from the station to the depot takes just a few minutes and removes the guesswork entirely.

Your Options From Seymour Station on Event Days

When a heritage train arrives at Seymour Station, a few hundred visitors step onto the platform at once. Here is how to get moving:

  • Taxi rank on Station Street. There is a taxi rank at Seymour Station on Station Street. On regular days, this works well. On event days, demand spikes and the rank can clear quickly.
  • Pre-book a Seymour taxi service to meet your train. This is the most reliable option on busy days. Book a Seymour taxi before you leave Melbourne, and your driver will be waiting when you step off the platform. Mention your train arrival time and how many are in your group.
  • Walk if you are able and travelling light. On a fine spring day, the walk from the station to town or to the Heritage Centre is pleasant enough for able-bodied visitors with no heavy bags.

If You Are Staying for the Day: Town, the Racecourse, and the Train Home

Seymour has more to offer than the platform. If your heritage train gives you a few hours in town, there is enough to fill them comfortably:

  • The main street has cafes, pubs and a bakery for lunch
  • Kings Park is a short drive away and good for families who want to stretch their legs
  • The Seymour Racecourse hosts race days throughout the year

For ways to get around Seymour during the 2026 event season, including tips on planning around local events, we have put together a full guide.

When it is time to head home, V/Line services from Seymour to Southern Cross run roughly hourly. The journey takes about an hour and 23 minutes. If your return V/Line train leaves after dark, read our guide to taxis at Seymour Station after dark so you are not left waiting.

Travelling With Kids, Prams and Bags on Heritage-Train Days

Heritage rail events attract families, and families bring gear. A few things worth knowing:

  • Prams and strollers can be bulky on heritage carriages with narrow corridors. Fold them before boarding where possible.
  • Child seats are available on request when you book a taxi. Mention ages when booking and the right seat will be fitted.
  • Luggage and shopping bags add up quickly, especially if you have been browsing the stalls at the SRHC Open Days or picked up finds at Show Us Ya Wheels. If you are travelling with large luggage through Seymour, our guide covers what to tell your driver so the right vehicle is sent.

Heritage tourism across regional Victoria continues to attract strong interest. V/Line’s Seymour line carried 1.75 million passengers in the 2023-24 financial year, according to V/Line’s Annual Report 2023-24 (source: corporate.vline.com.au, September 2024). Heritage rail events represent a growing share of that regional visitor traffic, and Seymour sits right at the intersection of the main north-east line and the Goulburn Valley.

How to Book Before Your Train Leaves Melbourne

You do not want to be standing on the platform in Seymour refreshing a rideshare app with patchy mobile reception. Here is what to do:

  • Book the day before. Book a Seymour taxi online or by phone before you board your heritage train. Mention your arrival time and group size.
  • Save the booking details to your phone. Mobile reception along the Seymour line is patchy in places, so do not rely on booking from the train.
  • Mention accessibility needs up front. If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, child seats, or extra boot space, let us know when you book so the right vehicle is ready.
